WHITE HOUSE – It only took the Lady Devils five innings to defeat Sycamore 10-0 on Tuesday night – their third district win of the season.
“One of the things I told them before we started was to remember this was a district game,” Lady Devils coach Cindy Towers said. “We needed to make sure to set the tone. We started out a little slow as far as hitting goes, but we do that sometimes. But by the second or third inning, we start putting it all together.”
White House had a field day at the plate with all but two Lady Devils getting at least one hit. Sophomore Kyra McCall led the way going 3-for-3 with two singles, one home run, two RBIs and crossed the plate three times. On the mound, freshman Kate Tobin went four innings and only gave up three hits and struck out four.
The Lady Devils scored their first two runs on a single from Tobin and Erica Moore reaching first on an error. The two made it all the way around with the help of passed balls and wild pitches. McCall led off the second run with a solo home run to take a 3-0 lead and put some real pressure on the Lady Eagles to answer.
The Lady Devils extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Moore, Copelynne Whitaker, Sydnee Frakes, McCall and Kaylee Rogers all got a third inning hit to get the scoring going. Whitaker, Frakes, McCall and Rogers each had an RBI hit in the third inning.
White House added two more in the fourth after back-to-back singles from Moore and Whitaker, followed by a sacrifice fly from Frakes to make it 9-0.
White House’s final run came from McCall in the bottom of the fifth inning. She led off with a single and made it to third base by the time Kaylee Rogers grounded out to shortstop scoring McCall for the 10th and final run of the game.
“We’re so young,” Towers said. “I’m using anywhere from four to five freshmen in a game, depending on what we’re doing. I think they’re finally settling in and they’ve caught up to the speed of the game, which is a great thing. They’re finally feeling comfortable.”
This puts the Lady Devils at 7-8 overall and 3-0 in the district. Their next district game is at cross-town rival and reining district champs White House Heritage. The last time the two played, Heritage came away with a 2-0 win in the district tournament to advance to the championship game.
“We haven’t faced Greenbrier or Heritage yet and that’s going to be two different type teams than what we’ve faced this far, but I think up to this point, this is a great way to start our district season with,” Towers said.
“We’re always trying to go to the dance, but we can’t get into the door. This year, the freshmen are really helping us and are becoming more and more talented. I think they’re going to help us contribute to put ourselves in a position to knock on the door and actually get in.”
