Springfield softball picks up 4 wins in opening week

The Springfield softball team made program history by advancing to its first TSSAA state tournament in 2019.

The Lady Yellow Jackets are off to a quick start this season after winning four games last week.

Springfield beat Clarksville, Northeast, Kenwood and Saint Benedict while suffering losses to Beech and Maryville in the Commando Classic. The Lady Yellow Jackets also tied Blackman.

Springfield opened the season with a 6-4 win at Clarksville. An RBI groundout from Victoria Clark and a two-run triple from Sarah Nicholson helped the Yellow Jackets pull away for good in the third. Nicholson later hit a solo home run in the sixth.

On Tuesday, the Lady Yellow Jackets blasted Northeast 11-0 in their home opener. Nicholson went deep again, and Emma Asmondy scattered three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings on the mound.

Springfield’s bats came alive on Wednesday in a 28-0 rout of Kenwood. Gracie Lance hit a grand slam in the third, while Clark added four RBI and Madeline Hanner had three. Pitchers Brie Asmondy and Elaina Goodfred combined for a three-inning shutout before the contest ended in a run-rule.

The Lady Yellow Jackets managed just five hits in their first loss to Beech Friday in the Commando Classic at Hendersonville’s Drakes Creek Park. Hours later, they battled Blackman to a 0-0 tie. Brie Asmondy tossed five scoreless innings while surrendering just three hits and striking out eight.

Maryville shut out Springfield 6-0 on Saturday. Emma Asmondy and Abbie Peach had Springfield’s only two base hits.

But the Lady Yellow Jackets bounced back with a 5-0 win over Saint Benedict later Saturday. Ellie Friedmann drove in a pair of runs with a single in the third, and Clark and Hannah Richardson each drove in one run apiece.

East Robertson tops Northwest, drops two to Westmoreland

The Lady Indians opened their 2020 campaign with a 17-5 drubbing of Northwest on Tuesday, March 10.

East Robertson finished with 20 total hits and scored 10 runs in the first inning alone. Trevecca signee Malone Thrift led the way by going 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI.

Savannah Hinkle, Olivia White and Maci Ryan each finished with three hits apiece. White had three RBI. Pitcher Rylee Hinkle struck out 10 Northwest batters and allowed three runs in 6.2 innings of work.

East Robertson then suffered back-to-back losses in a doubleheader at Westmoreland. The Lady Eagles took won the first game 4-3 and the second 12-0. 

Darby Inman had East Robertson’s lone hit in Game 1 – a run-scoring single in the top of the first inning.

The Lady Indians managed five hits in Game 2, including a pair of base knocks from Kaley Ezell, but they failed to cross the plate as Westmoreland scored 12 runs on nine hits. Zoey Fuller carried the Lady Eagles by batting 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Greenbrier earns wins over Harpeth, Arab

The Lady Bobcats went 2-3 during the opening week of softball season.

After suffering a 6-5 loss at Westmoreland on Monday, Greenbrier bounced back with wins over Harpeth and Arab.

Westmoreland senior Avery Morris hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth to down the Lady Bobcats on Opening Day.

Greenbrier responded with a 17-6 win over Harpeth on Wednesday. Gracie Rudd hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the rout was on from there. The Lady Bobcats finished with 21 hits, including multi-hit performances from Rudd, Raylon Roach, Claire Henley, Kimberly Cox, Snowden Scott and Morgan Henley.

The Lady Bobcats traveled to Huntsville for the Trojan Classic March 13-14. Greenbrier began the tournament by beating Arab 11-0 but later fell to Hazel Green 3-2 and Ardmore 8-0.

Carley Clinard delivered a four-inning no-hitter against Arab. She struck out three and walked just one.

Greenbrier scored six runs in the third with singles from Claire Henley, Rudd, Morgan Henley and Kayla Doble. Makenzie Zaborney also doubled and finished 2-for-2. Doble led with three RBI.

Lady Patriots finish first week 3-2

White House Heritage earned wins over Hendersonville, White House and the Lady Knights last week.

Julie Glodoski hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth against White House on Monday. The Lady Patriots cruised to a 13-5 victory after scoring six more runs in the sixth inning.

Glodoski, Carlee Duke and Samantha Burke each finished with three hits apiece. Brynna Hinshaw, Kinsley Caruthers and Audrey Brinkley had two hits each.

Heritage then dropped back-to-back games to Westmoreland and Maryville. A late comeback wasn’t enough in the 9-8 loss to Westmoreland on Tuesday, and the Lady Patriots were topped by Maryville 6-1 in their Commando Classic opener on Friday. 

Heritage then dismantled Hendersonville 16-2 on Saturday at Drakes Creek Park. Burke hit a pair of homers, and Kailee Gilreath also went deep.

The Lady Patriots wrapped the Commando Classic with a 5-0 win over the Lady Knights. Caruthers went four scoreless innings on the mound, while Burke and Staten Holmes each had two hits.
