Springfield freshman Keimarian Flair and his Yellow Jacket teammates didn’t let the flu keep them from continuing their dominance of rival Greenbrier.
The guard scored 16 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 57-46 home win over Greenbrier on Thursday night. It was Springfield’s 14th consecutive victory in the series since its last loss in January 2012.
Flair scored 10 points in the second quarter alone, but Springfield trailed 22-20 at halftime.
“Keimarian played great,” Springfield coach Micah Rochester said. “He’s been out with the flu, and it’s taken him some time to get back to himself.”
Fortunately for Flair, help was on the way. Keyshawn Robinson, Savion Scott and Will Smith each scored 10 points apiece to propel the Yellow Jackets to a comeback victory.
Springfield outscored Greenbrier 20-6 in the third quarter to take the lead for good. The Yellow Jackets also beat the Bobcats 59-50 on Jan. 3.
“I thought we played better (on Thursday), but I don’t think we’ve played to our full potential yet,” Rochester said. “Hopefully we can put everything together in this last week and play our best basketball in the (District 10-AAA) tournament.”
Devin Blankenship led Greenbrier with 14 points. Senior classmate Noah Griffin added eight, including a pair of threes. The Bobcats (13-11) host White House on Tuesday, Feb. 11 for Coming Home.
Springfield (10-15) continued its streaky season with a 53-43 win over Clarksville Northwest on Friday. The Yellow Jackets lost nine of their first 10 games, won six of their next seven, and then lost five of their next six. Now Springfield has won two straight contests.
Despite that, Rochester said his team is trying its best to remain focused on the next opponent. The Yellow Jackets travel to Montgomery Central (3-18) on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
“We never really talk about losing or winning streaks,” Rochester said. “We try to focus on the next game because each opponent brings a different challenge for us. We try to just focus on us and improve in each practice and game.”
