PICK ‘EM: Brady’s Week 7 Montgomery County picks

Record: 18-9

Last week: 6-1

We’ve officially reached October football. That means it’s time for the final stretch as several Montgomery County schools jostle for playoff positioning.

Last week was a good week for my picks… unless you’re West Creek. I’m sorry for picking you guys to win against your will. That’s my bad.

Week 7 has some pretty clear-cut games but is not without its must-watch matchups. Let’s not waste any more time. Time to make some picks!

Clarksville at Clarksville Northeast (Friday at 7 p.m.)

The Eagles are coming off their first win of the season, and it was a doozy.

After starting 0-5 and losing their starting quarterback mid-season to a transfer, freshman QB Jaiden Puig tossed three touchdowns as the offense hung 54 points on the West Creek Coyotes in a 33-point win. Northeast has scored more points in two games with Puig at quarterback than they did in four games with J’Lin Powell.

Will that trend continue against the Wildcats, who were 16 seconds away from upsetting Dyer County? It’s more possible than one might have thought at the beginning of the season. Clarksville looked like they had serious potential after their Week 1 win over Rossview but have since gone 1-4.

That said, I’m going to give the Wildcats the edge here. Their offense has struggled in most of their games, but I think they’ll have enough to beat out the surprising Eagles.

Prediction: Clarksville 38, Northeast 30

Dyer County at Clarksville Northwest (Friday at 7 p.m.)

I’ll fully admit that I thought Northwest had something going early on. The Vikings started 3-0 with no close games, but have since lost three in a row, albeit against some good teams in Montgomery County and Summit.

Unfortunately, another good team awaits. Dyer County (5-1) is one of their tougher matchups so far, and there is a pretty good chance the Vikings won’t have enough offense to keep it close.

Prediction: Dyer County 28, Northwest 7

West Creek at Kenwood (Friday at 7 p.m.)

These are arguably the two most athletic teams in the county, so this one should be a barn burner.

I just absolutely cannot predict these Coyotes correctly. It’s no secret that they read this (hey, guys!) and want me to pick them to lose. It gives them motivation – bulletin board material, if you will. After I picked them to lose to Portland, they beat them. Because of that, I picked them to beat Northeast, and they got blown out. I just cannot win with them.

Then there’s Kenwood. The Knights are 2-4, but both of their wins are over conference opponents. The big question is how they will come back out after being shut out and losing by 56 to Henry County. Kenwood coach Les Greer attributed the loss to preparation, so how will they prepare for the Coyotes?

I think things change this week.

Prediction: Kenwood 37, West Creek 31

Davidson Academy at Clarksville Academy (Friday at 7 p.m.)

Things are not going well in Cougar country. With four straight losses, Clarksville Academy has fallen squarely out of region contention, but there is still a chance at redemption. Confidence is just one win away!

The Cougars run the ball, which means that, if they start to trail early, they’re in trouble since they’re not adept at moving the ball down the field in a hurry without much of a passing game.

The good news is that Davidson Academy is far from their toughest test this season. I’m not entirely optimistic about their chances, but the opportunity is certainly there.

Prediction: Davidson Academy 31, Clarksville Academy 21

Montgomery Central at Greenbrier (Friday at 7 p.m.)

I’m not going to pull any punches here – this one is going to be a blowout.

The Indians just pummeled Harpeth and draw another struggling team in Greenbrier. As long as they move the ball and control the clock (hint: they will), this one should be a relatively easy win for Montgomery Central.

Prediction: Montgomery Central 31, Greenbrier 7

Rossview at Mount Juliet (Friday at 7 p.m.)

After losing in Week 1 to Clarksville, the Hawks have won four of five games, with their only loss being a six-point defeat against the talented Wilson Central Wildcats.

That said, the Golden Bears will absolutely be Rossview’s toughest test to date. This is the team that blew out aforementioned Wilson Central, lost to Main Street Preps’ No. 2 Gallatin by just one touchdown and is currently first place in the tough Region 4-6A.

I wish I could take Rossview in this one. I want to believe they’ll pull it off. I just can’t bring myself to do it – not yet.

Prediction: Mount Juliet 31, Rossview 14
