The Greenbrier girls basketball team put together a dominant three quarters that gave them a 62-40 victory over White House Tuesday night.

The Lady Devils held a 16-5 lead after the first quarter before it all fell apart. Greenbrier outscored White House 28-7 in the second quarter and did not let up the rest of the night.

White House likes to press their opponents into making mistakes. Greenbrier responded well, and head coach Brianna Gillen said they spent a lot of time in practice working on it.

“We’ve been really working on that,” Gillen said. “We’ve been worried about the press because it’s no secret ball pressure is what usually gets us, and we were able to fight that press.”

Gillen said this was “definitely” the best her team has played all season, picking up a huge district win over a quality opponent in White House. Offensively, they are solid, but they still have room to work on the defensive side of the ball.

“I think our defense is going to be our number one look probably to work on,” Gillen said. “Offensively, it’s like we finally crossed a hump there, and I’ve typically got five girls that want to score on the floor.”

Greenbrier also celebrated the four senior members of the team Tuesday night. All four started and also scored on the night. Gillen has been with those players since middle school, so there is a special bond between the girls and their coach.

“For some of them, I’m the only basketball coach they’ve ever had which is kind of special,” Gillen said. “They mean a whole lot to me.”

Emotions boiled over for the Lady Devils in the fourth quarter. White House’s Avery Droz picked up a flagrant foul that forced her out of the game. Head coach Kelly Smelcer immediately walked into the locker room after the call was made, leaving assistant coach Andrew Peters to coach the final 3:46 of the game.

The precise reason Smelcer left the floor is unclear, and she declined to comment on the issue.

Peters said the Lady Devils just could not piece together a complete game after losing their lead.

“We couldn’t string enough good moments together to sustain us the rest of the way after getting off to that slow start,” Peters said. “We got our lead; we just couldn’t sustain it throughout the rest of the game.”

Greenbrier also defeated White House Friday night 53-50.
