Two Springfield High School football seniors have been named to the U.S. Army 4A Preseason All-State team by Murphy Fair Publications.
Defensive back Gabe Kelly and offensive lineman Tristan Petit were both selected after playing key roles for the Yellow Jackets as juniors in 2019.
Kelly was named TnFCA All-State as a defensive back last season and spent time at wide receiver. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder finished with 79 tackles, seven interceptions and two fumble recoveries on defense while adding 10 catches for 304 yards and three touchdowns on offense. He holds offers from Eastern Kentucky and UT-Martin.
Petit, who stands 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, helped pave the way for Kevontez Hudson and Kevontay White to rush for 1,000-plus yards in 2019. Springfield totaled 2,983 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns on 497 carries. Petit earned 2019 TSWA All-State honors and was offered by Centre College in May.
Springfield was picked to finish fourth in Murphy Fair’s Coaches Preseason Class 4A Top 10 poll. The Yellow Jackets went 11-4 and won seven straight games last October and November to advance to the Class 4A state championship game, where they fell to Elizabethton 30-6.
