Greenbrier senior Hunter Hardaway and White House junior Kyleigh Husted both fell just short of winning TSSAA state bowling individual championships on Friday at the Smyrna Bowling Center.

Hardaway finished as runner-up to Hardin County junior John Smith in the Division I boys championship. Smith won the final match 180-171.

Hardaway placed first in the quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday to enter the championship round as the No. 1 seed. He had a total pinfall of 1,688 and averaged a 211 before falling to Smith.

Husted had a much tougher road to the championship match. She entered the final round as the No. 6 seed, meaning she had to defeat the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 seeds to earn a matchup with Bartlett senior and No. 1 seed Jordan Mundt.

After knocking down 1,490 pins and averaging 186.3 per game in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Husted opened Friday’s competition with a 197-180 victory over Hardin County freshman Gracie Franks, the No. 5 seed.

She then easily defeated Lawrence County senior and No. 3 seed Madison Goshert 223-190, followed by another 190-149 blowout over Cherokee senior Shelbie Garrison, the No. 3 seed. Husted then squeaked out a 215-213 victory against Hardin County junior Kailee Channell to advance to the championship.

However, Husted met her match against Mundt, who was in her first action of the day and emerged with a 207-189 win for the Division I girls championship.

Husted is the second consecutive bowler from White House to finish second in the state after senior Jacob Watts was the Division I boys runner-up last year. Watts, who bowled a 300 game prior to the final, also lost in his championship match in 2019.

Several other area individuals participated in the state bowling tournament. White House junior Austin Vickers narrowly finished qualifying for the boys final round after knocking down 1,511 pins and averaging a 188.9 in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

On the girls side, White House Heritage junior Katherine Campbell finished in 15th place with 1,331 pins and White House senior Lauren Smith took 16th (1,327 pins). White House junior Miranda Cain bowled a 640 in the quarterfinals, which fell 13 pins short of the cutoff for the semifinals.
