White House Heritage traveled to Sycamore on Friday night and pulled off a 35-10 victory over the War Eagles behind three total touchdowns from junior quarterback Taye Francis.

Heritage improved to 3-1 and Sycamore fell to 0-4.

“It’s always good to win,” Heritage coach Stetson Dickerson said. “We do have some things to clean up. Injuries have been piling up. We wanted to come out and make some good things happen and especially learn from our mistakes (we made) last week.”

The first quarter of play was a defensive slugfest, with each offense only having one possession each. The War Eagles were able to put three points on the board after a 37-yard field goal, but the Patriots were able to answer on their next drive with a six-yard touchdown run from Francis. That gave Heritage a 7-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

With 5:18 left in the first half, Heritage sophomore Colby Hulsey busted into the end zone on a one-yard run to put the Patriots ahead 14-3 before halftime.

After the break, the Patriots scored again with little resistance from the War Eagle defense. Francis picked up his second score on a four-yard run to make it 20-3 in favor of Heritage.

Heritage kept its foot on the gas at the beginning of the fourth quarter. On the War Eagles’ first drive of the quarter, Ty Minnick caught an interception to give the Patriots the ball back. Francis followed with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Cole Thomerson with six minutes remaining.

With just under two minutes left in the game, Heritage freshman Adrian Bonilla ran for a 33-yard score to give the Patriots a comfortable 34-3 cushion.

The War Eagles finally scored a touchdown when Nathaniel Haven returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards to the end zone to cut the deficit to 34-10.

Sycamore will have to wait at least another week for a chance to earn its first victory. The War Eagles host Fairview on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.

“Everybody is wanting a win, (but) the teams we are playing are tough,” Sycamore coach Mark Hall said. “In the second half (of the schedule), it gets a little easier.

“We always play with heart for each other, for the school and for the fans.  I’ve never questioned their heart. They always play hard.”

Heritage will make the short trip to Greenbrier next Friday. Kickoff is also at 7 p.m.
