It took a comeback effort, but Cheatham County Central was able to get a first-round district tournament win over Greenbrier 67-57.
The Bobcats were hot out of the gate, Izik Rector, Brayden Rector, and Hunter Thaxton all knocked down 3-pointers to give Greenbrier an 18-8 lead, but Cheatham never wavered and Greenbrier’s offense slowed down in the second quarter.
Greenbrier’s offense slowed and Cheatham’s showed as the Cubs outscored Greenbrier 20-8 in the second allowing Cheatham to take a 28-26 lead to the half behind seven points from Andrew Mayberry.
The third quarter saw Cheatham grow its lead ever so slightly as the Cubs outscored Greenbrier 18-15 to push the advantage to 46-41.
To begin the final period, Cheatham went on a massive run to push the lead to 55-43 but the Bobcats answered. Greenbrier got back to within striking distance to bring Cheatham’s lead down to 55-50 with still four minutes remaining in the final quarter.
Cheatham went on to win 67-57 after knocking down some clutch free throws and holding off a tough Greenbrier squad. With the win, Cheatham moved on to the semi-finals of the district tournament while Greenbrier’s season is over.
Tucker Carter finished with 21 points to lead Cheatham and Liam Hayes’ five three-pointers kept the Cubs offense afloat when nothing else was falling. Between those two, Andrew Mayberry’s presence inside, and a strong defensive effort from the Cubs, they were able to advance to the semifinal round.
