HOUSTON COUNTY – For the first time since 2011, the East Robertson Lady Indians are heading to the district championship after a 54-48 win over Jo Byrns.

Senior Hannah Mills led the Lady Indians to a 21-point first quarter with four 3-pointers. Junior Ashlyn Wright also added 6 points of her own after a perfect 1-for-1 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. East Robertson had a 4-point lead at the end of the first and second quarters, helping them stay in front in the second half.

“The first half, Hannah kept us in the game by making so many threes,” Lady Indians coach Kenyatta Perry said. “When she does that, we’re a good team. (Ashtyn) Blair scoring in the post and Camryn controlling the tempo, we looked good. The second half we looked a lot more aggressive and were able to get to the basket a little bit more.”

With three minuets to go in the fourth quarter and only a 6-point lead, East’s leading scorer was out of the game for the final three minutes and Jo Byrns had its best chance to overcome the deficit. But the Lady Devils just couldn’t get it done, even with East Robertson going 8-of-16 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

“We have four seniors on the team, so they’ve been in a lot of games like this. This team this year has been really good at closing out games,” Perry said. “They weren’t rattled when Hannah fouled out, they knew what to do and we still had a little bit of momentum.”

The Lady Indians will face Houston County for the district championship on Friday at 5:30, while Jo Byrns faces McEwen at 3:30 on Friday in the consolation game. Because there are only four teams in district 9-A, all four teams will automatically advance to the region tournament.

“They’re confident,” Perry said. “We beat Houston County here during the regular season and we kind of figured that they would be the ones we would have to face in a district championship game.”

“But that early win gave us some confidence for Friday. We know they’re a really good team. They’re well coached. We expect a battle, but we’re going to be ready to play.”
