November is National Diabetes Month! Diabetes affects about 30.3 million Americans or about 9.4 percent of the U.S. population.
Here in Robertson County, 12 percent of the population has been diagnosed with Diabetes according to County Health Rankings. Nearly one in four adults living with diabetes, or 7.2 million Americans, are unaware that they have the disease.
Another 84 million Americans have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Nine out of 10 adults with prediabetes don’t know they have it.
Diabetes can be difficult to manage especially when trying to navigate what foods to eat. UT Extension Robertson County will be hosting a support group for individuals with diabetes and those caring for them. Each meeting will focus on a different diabetes topic related to nutrition and allow for opportunities to learn, share and get questions answered.
The group will meet the third Wednesday of each month from 10-11 a.m. at the UT Extension office located at 408 North Main Street in Springfield. It is free to attend. The first meeting will be Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m., and the focus will be on Holiday Eating.
