Sister Katherine Groves Woodard

Sister Katherine Groves Woodard was born May 10, 1937 to the late Rogied and Robbie Groves.

She departed this life on January 7, 2021 at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield. She accepted Christ at an early age at Friendship Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Thomas Sweeney. She sang in the Senior Choir and Women’s Chorus. She served for many years as Vice President of the Kitchen Committee. She received her education at Red River School in Orlinda.

She was employed for many years, cooking for the public. Two of those was Jim Dandy Market and Foodtown in Cross Plains. “Big Mama” as she was known by so many people always had a big smile on her face and she never met a stranger.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Al Joe Woodard and 2 brothers, Robert Groves and Lee Groves. She leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters, Edna (Curtis) Dowlen of Franklin, KY, Gloria (Keith) Moore of Springfield, and Rita (Walter) Kennedy of Woodburn, KY; three sons, Robert Woodard of Cross Plains, Ricky (Maudie) Woodard of Cross Plains, and Joe (Michelle) Woodard of Franklin, KY; two step-daughters, Betty Lunsford and Nancy (Paul) Payne; one brother, James Terry (Sue) Groves of Cross Plains; two sisters-in-law, Martha Groves of Indianapolis, IN and Diane Groves of Detroit, MI; 17 grandchildren, Bryant (Anita) Teresa (Jack), Tony, Mikey, Dawn, Terence, Christy, Shawnta, Sharday, Alyssa, Joseph (Tameka), Natasha, Brittany, K.T., Rachael, and Susan; 20 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends from all directions, north, south, east, and west.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Cross Plains with Reverend Arneal Strain officiating. Burial Followed in Friendship Church Cemetery with Jason Groves, Devyn Fuqua, Deion Hirsburner, Bryant Dowlen, Jr., Terry Allen Groves, and Jeff Chatman serving as pallbearers. Flower Bearers were granddaughters, nieces, cousins, and friends. 

Robertson County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
