As soon as spring hits middle Tennessee, the public works department is anticipating beginning the construction of the third phase of the Springfield Greenway.

At the December meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, the board awarded the construction contract bid for Phase 3 to Sessions Paving Company in the amount of $1,136,145.45, which is subject to approval from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).

The money budgeted for the project is covered 80-percent with federal funding and 20-percent with General Fund bonds.

Ellis said once a preconstruction meeting with the state takes place, construction will likely begin sometime this spring.

The CSX Railroad will also be involved at some point in creating a cross walk on Main Street right inside their right-of-way, according to Alan Ellis, public works director for Springfield.

“They will be changing the arms there at the railroad crossing,” Ellis said. “They will also be placing smaller arms where the walkway will be.”

The walkway will be 10-feet wide with acorn style lights like the ones already located in downtown Springfield.

The stretch of walkway will span south on Main Street to Central Avenue, take a right on Central and travel west, over to the intersection of Richard and John L. Patterson streets with Central Avenue.

The Greenway will continue across Central Avenue with a crosswalk and will continue on the western side of John L. Patterson Street – south to Bransford Drive, according to Ellis.

Once it crosses Bransford Drive, the greenway will be completed with a sign detailing the history of the old Bransford High School.

“We anticipate the work to take about nine to 12 months once we get started,” Ellis said. “There is drainage work that has to be completed as well as work with the electric department that has to move their poles. Telephone and cable companies will also need to move their equipment. The railroad will also have to complete its work.”

Phase 1 of the Springfield Greenway, completed in the early 2000s, traveled from J. Travis Price Park over to Garner Street Park near downtown, Ellis said.

In 2007, Ellis said Phase 2 extended the greenway from Garner Street Park to Cheatham Park, down to the Springfield Senior Citizen Center, then through the city parking lot located behind Reliant Bank. It then went over to Main Street. The pathway heads south on Main and ends at Ninth Avenue.
