The City of Springfield recently hosted the grand opening of its first inclusive playground at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
The new facility includes sensory features that will enable children of differing ability levels to play together. The grounds and section of the equipment are also wheelchair accessible.
This project is partially funded by a Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant of $500,000 that was awarded to The Springfield Parks & Recreation Department.
The complete project, expected to be finished later this year, will include a walking trail and two multi-purpose fields with bleachers.
The playground’s grand opening also coincides with the opening of the Citys’ new splash pad at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
The splash pad will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Aug. 1 and then 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the remainder of the summer season.
