Standout athletes from Springfield’s storied history are about to get their due.
The Springfield High School Athletic Association announced the creation of the Springfield Athletic High School Hall of Fame on Monday, July 22.
The organization is seeking nominations from the community for the first Hall of Fame class, which will be officially inducted in January 2020. Former athletes, coaches, administrators and other contributors will be considered. Athletes are eligible 10 years after their graduation, while everyone else is eligible five years after they have left Springfield High School.
Bransford High School alumni are also eligible for nomination. The school closed shortly after integration in 1969. Most Bransford students went on to attend Springfield.
Mark Reeves, SHSAA president, said the organization has been hoping to organize the Hall of Fame for several years. Since its creation in 2012, the SHSAA has focused on raising nearly $250,000 to help build and maintain Springfield’s athletic facilities.
“The timing was right because we have a lot of facilities on campus now,” Reeves said. “We knew this was a big undertaking because there’s such a rich history for Springfield athletics.”
The current school building opened in 1982, but Springfield’s history dates back much further. The Yellow Jackets have played football since at least 1919, according to historical records obtained by Athletic Director Dustin Wilson.
The SHSAA has assembled a selection committee of alumni and former coaches and teachers to consider the nominations and select the first class. The Hall of Fame’s bylaws call for 12 people to be inducted in each of the first three years.
“They are going to have a very, very difficult task,” Reeves said of the selection committee. “We know that there are dozens of slam dunks in terms of folks that need to be recognized.”
Nominations will be accepted through Sept. 1. Reeves said the organization plans to announce the first Springfield Hall of Famers in early October, with a banquet and official induction ceremony set for January.
Paper nomination forms can be picked up at the Robertson County YMCA, the Robertson County Chamber of Commerce or the Springfield Civic Center. The forms can also be found on the Springfield High School website.
