It was the end of an era when the Springfield Shoney’s restaurant building was torn down last week. SAVANNAH BURTON

For more than four decades, Shoney’s has been a landmark in the Springfield community.

While the local restaurant had been ‘temporarily closed’ for much of the pandemic, patrons eager for its reopening were surprised last week to see that the building on Memorial Boulevard had been completely demolished.

One of those patrons wrote on social media, “Farewell Shoney’s – thanks for the memories.”

Another customer also expressed disappointment online, “The inevitable end of yet another nostalgic restaurant in my life. Many good memories of long ago.”

Unfortunately, for those residents who were looking forward to resuming the popular restaurant’s breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, the company has no plans to reopen in Springfield.

The former Shoney’s site is now on the market, listed through G.S. Moore and Son Real Estate which deals with residential, commercial and rental properties in Robertson and surrounding counties.

“Shoney's has been a landmark in Springfield since 1978,” the local real estate company posted on their personal Facebook page last week.

“Unfortunately, they've decided not to reopen so we are actively recruiting future retailers for this site. Stay tuned.”

There’s no official word yet on what might be coming to the Memorial Boulevard site.
