A massive fire has destroyed a large building in downtown Springfield in the early morning of Thursday, Jan. 9.

At around 6:30 a.m., a 911 call was received to report a growing fire in the B & J Automotive store located on South Main Street. According to Springfield Public Affairs Coordinator Candice Tillman, the first trucks to the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the building.

“Crews made an attempted interior fire attack but were overtaken by the flames and resorted to a defensive attack. They called in additional resources to assist,” Tillman said.

Tillman said the fire has been contained, and firefighters have been working to put out hot spots. The building is considered to be a total loss, and the Springfield Fire Department will be conducting an arson investigation.

Due to the severe nature of the fire, road closures and power outages will continue until the area is cleared. Road closures include Central Avenue from Batts Boulevard to Cheatham Street,

South Main Street from 15th Avenue to Central Avenue and Batts Boulevard from 15th Avenue to Central Avenue. Power outages have affected three customers and one traffic light, Tillman said.
