Juanita Wix is known to most in Cross Plains as the owner of True’s BBQ – a landmark since 1986.
What might be a surprise to her friends and customers is Wix’s talent and accomplishments as a quilter. She was the recent recipient of an award for one of her original quilts. ‘Taste the Experience’ was the winning quilt and is a Row by Row tribute to her restaurant.
Row by Row quilts are assembled using segments that come from quilting stores all over the US and abroad. Each year the participating shops create a block based on a common theme.
Quilters then connect with each other on social media and swap the squares, often traveling out of state or enlisting friends to pick up squares during trips – a sort of scavenger hunt for quilters. The concept of Row by Row quilts was created to help small quilt shops with sales during the normally slow months.
Wix began quilting just three years ago when she wished to make keepsakes from clothing belonging to her father and aunt in order to hold on to precious memories after their passing. She enjoyed the idea of making heirloom quilts and took classes at the Quilting Studio in White House at 610-A Highway 76. Kits and classes are available through their website or in store. Wix describes her love of the craft, “It is relaxing. It feels good to accomplish something. This gives me alone time with God when I try to figure things out.”
She plans to use the prizes to make more quilts and wished to express her gratitude to the participating quilt shops used in the winning design – 18 in all from the US and Canada.
“Thank you to all the shops that participate in the Row by Row experience,” she said. “We love what we do and appreciate all your hard work.”
