Family and Community Education clubs provide volunteers for UT Extension

March is UT Extension Month. UT Extension is focused on improving the quality of life for Tennesseans. Tennessee Extension relies on volunteers to help accomplish this mission, and one source of volunteers is the Tennessee Association of Family and Community Education Clubs. In Robertson County, there are eight Family and Community Education (FCE) clubs throughout the county who serve as a network of volunteers and work together to build strong families and communities.

The goals of Family and Community Education Clubs are to learn through shared experiences, improve home and community life, strengthen adult education and promote projects that enhance family and community life.

Robertson County FCE clubs learn by facilitating a leader lesson prepared by University of Tennessee Extension specialists and agents for club members each month on topics related to family, food, health, home and money, and many clubs also offer marketable skills workshops such as knitting and jewelry making. In return, club members share their knowledge and skills learned with others.

Robertson County FCE clubs support agencies such as CASA, Open Door Pregnancy Center, Robertson County Schools Family Resource Center, Master’s Table and Robertson County 4-H Youth Development through monetary donations, organizing the community Angel Tree, packing blessing bags, knitting scarves and hats, camp and college scholarships, service hours and donating school supplies among other things.

FCE members are also invited to participate in a regional leadership retreat and state conferences. Many clubs enjoy taking day trips, participating in events such as the cultural arts event each year, attending county wide workshops and special interest clubs such as the Quilt Club.

Membership in Family and Community Education Clubs is open to anyone, and clubs are always accepting new members. You can find more information and the club meeting schedules by contacting a current club member or the Robertson County Extension office. Information is also available on the UT Extension-Robertson County website and the Robertson County Family and Community Education Facebook page.
