Coopertown officials have announced the Barrel Festival and its activities will not be held for 2020 due to construction on the Coopertown Elementary School.

In the past seven years the festival has been held, it has used the parking lots of the school as the location for the activities and the Barrel Festival Car Show. According to Coopertown City Recorder Kathy Smith, the city simply didn’t have enough time or another location to move the festival to for this year. Smith explained that the city would look to bring back the Barrel Festival in the future once the construction on the school is complete.

The Barrel Festival would generally be held the first Saturday of the month of June. It included fun activities, a car show and a 5-mile run. Vicky Bumgarnder, who is in charge of the run, explained this event was started by the previous mayor to encourage community involvement.

A notice has been posted on the Coopertown city website announcing the decision to cancel this year’s festival. Their hope is to bring the festival back as early as 2021.
