The Sumner County Health Committee is celebrating its 7th year of Walk Across Sumner, a four-week campaign that encourages Sumner County residents to get physically active and move more for 30 minutes a day, six days a week.

Walk Across Sumner is a Sumner County Health Committee campaign that encourages physical activity and raises funds for physical education departments in Sumner County Schools. Over the previous six years $25,000 in donations were raised.

All proceeds from the campaign go to support the physical education programs in the schools. This initiative is designed to motivate individuals and groups to adopt physical activity into their daily routine, with an overall goal of improving the health of Sumner County and driving the county to #1 in the state.

Currently we are ranked 4th out of 95 counties. By averaging 173 minutes of physical activity or 8.6 miles per week, a person can Walk Across Sumner (34.5 miles). It's not as hard as it sounds and requires nothing more than a pair of walking shoes. So, get out and get moving! Any type of physical activity counts.

The campaign begins Saturday, Oct. 7 and runs through Saturday, Nov. 11. Registration is free unless you would like to purchase a Walk Across Sumner t-shirt. Two dollars from each t-shirt sale goes to the Sumner County School of your choice!

"If you could put physical activity into a pill; it would be the most prescribed medicine in the world" states County Health Department Director Hal Hendricks. Physical activity in any form can help to maintain a healthy weight or weight loss. It can also lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and other illnesses, as well as reduce stress and boost your mood. Lifestyles with a lack of physical activity do just the opposite.

Despite knowing all the health benefits of physical activity, people worldwide are not moving enough. According to recent data, Tennessee ranks 42nd in lack of physical activity and 36th in adult obesity. The Sumner County Health Committee is committed to improving the health of all residents within this county.

Participants are encouraged to attend the kickoff ceremony scheduled to start at 8:20 a.m., Oct. 7, at Triple Creek Park in Gallatin. Individuals or community groups interested in participating can download a free five-week walking log at www.healthysumner.com. The website has information regarding greenways and trails along with maps to assist you with getting started on your Walk Across Sumner.

Hal Hendricks is the director of the Sumner County Health Department.
