The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery crash Sunday night in Springfield that took the life of Dezrick Shannon, 31, of Springfield, according to Springfield Police.

In a release issued on Monday, Sept. 11, officers said at about 8:45 p.m., Shannon was driving a red, Ford Crown Victoria as he sped through Springfield streets last night prior to hitting a tree.

"The vehicle, moving at a very high rate of speed, failed to stop at Central Avenue and continued north on Cheatham Street," the release said. "The witnesses advised the vehicle continued traveling at the same high speed when it crossed the railroad track at 10th Avenue West and sparks could be seen as the vehicle went over the tracks. The vehicle then side swiped a light pole at 9th Avenue and Cheatham Street and continued northbound."

The vehicle struck a tree in front of a home across from Centerstone on Cheatham street, according to the release.

Springfield Police, Springfield Fire, EMS and the THP responded to the scene.
