Cross Plains man identified in Kentucky traffic fatality

Kentucky State Police report that Cross Plains resident Dale Covington, 60, was killed Sunday, June 11 on I-65, a couple of miles north of Mammoth Cave National Park.

The Kentucky State Police Post 3 in Bowling Green responded to the single vehicle accident shortly after 4 p.m., according to a release from the post.

The report said Covington was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup northbound on I-65 when he went off the right side of the roadway for unknown reasons.

The pickup truck struck the end of a guardrail and overturned, according to the release. It ended up underneath a sign post.

Police said Covington, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Barren County Coroner's Office.

Covington was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the Cross Plains United Methodist Church, according to his obituary.

He was married to Tammy Leonard Covington of Cross Plains.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Yates Cave, located at 4834 Yates Cave Road in Cross Plains from 1 to 4:45 p.m.

There will be a graveside service at 5 p.m. at the Cross Plains United Methodist Church Cemetery with Bro. Clint Jones officiating.

​Sumner County Funeral and Cremation Services is charge of the arrangements.
